Frederick Perls Dream Theory

5
Frederick Perls Dream Theory

Frederick Perls was born in 1893 and he was the founder of the Gestalt Therapy the Gestalt Therapy is when you look for help to fix your emotions where you have void so that you can feel whole. Perls believed that dreams were where people felt rejected and where they disowned who they were.

Dreams and Who You Are

He believed that all characters in your dreams represent who you are. If you dream about a tornado, you are the tornado, if you dream about a child, you are the child. You can even be a broken-down car or a book. He did not believe that dreams were universal or symbolic and he thought that dreams were different for each person.

Listen to Your Dreams and Find Out Who You Are

If you have to discover who you are after being disowned, Perls believed that you should retell your dreams in the present tense and act out the dream. He also believed that dreams are part of a symbolic meaning and that they are part of the universe. He thought that dreams were unique to each person and that is why they could discover themselves in the dreams.

When you have dreams, he felt that if you were able to look at each part of your dream and find out what it really meant then you could find out more about who you are. He felt that all of the rolls and characters in your dream were important and made an overall difference in what your dreams mean.

Your Dreams Make You Feel Better

He felt that talking about each part of your dream would leave you feeling better. He felt that you should reenact all parts of your dream and take on all of the different characters and objects. He felt that by starting a dialogue with the dream object that you could express what you are really feeling inside.

Everyone Acts Out in Dreams

When you take a different role in your dream and act it out, Perls believed that you could realize feelings that you have buried, and your dream will come alive. Even when you dream, Perls believed that it was important to tell your dream and to act it out in the present tense and not act it out in something that wasn’t realistic.

Jung Dream Theory

5
Carl Gustav Jung

Carl Gustav Jung was born in 1875 and he believed that dreams happened in the unconscious mind. He did not feel that the mind was sexual but more spiritual. Jung thought that Freud had weird ideas on dreams.

Jung believed that dreams would help you communicate with yourself and your unconscious mind and that even if you are trying to hide your feelings when you are awake that you would know what you were really feeling by your dreams.

He believed that dreams help you to figure out how to be whole and to solve problems that you have while you are awake. Jung believed that your ego would help you understand your part in the world.

Jung thought that things could be paired in opposites such as women and men, good and evil, love and hate. He thought that your mind worked against the ego and called it the counter ego. He also called it the shadow self. The shadow was there so that you could reject parts of yourself that you did not want to face. He believed that the shadow was the primitive part of yourself and was considered strange and awkward.

Dream Interpretation

Jung believed that dreams were a way that you could communicate with your mind. He believed that images would reveal who you were and how you viewed other people. He felt that dreams could help to guide you and help you to grow to who you were meant to be.

Jung believed that dreams were there so that you could understand your life. By talking about your life and what is happening, Jung believed that you could interpret your dream images and that you could be more confident when you dreamed.

Jung believed that everyone dreams as a tool so that they can interpret what they are dreaming and there is no real way to interpret dreams. He believes that your dreams are a judgement of yourself and you interpret them the way that you feel is right and important. He doesn’t believe that what other people think matters.

  • Archetypes

Jung believed that some dream symbols had the same meaning for men and women. He called these “collective unconscious.” He believed that your dreams are personal but some of the symbols and themes worked for everyone and that they worked the same in all cultures.

Jung identified there to be seven different characters that were collective for everyone including:  Persona, shadow, animal, divine child, wise old man, great mother and the truckers.

  • Persona

The persona is when you are awake, and you are in the public. He believes you put on a mask but when you dream you are your real self. The self may not look like who you are or act like how you would act. An example would be that you might come as a poor person in your dream and even though he or she doesn’t look like you, that person represents you.

  • Shadow

This part of your dreams represents yourself. It is the part of you that you don’t want the world to see because it seems ugly or gross. This is the part of you that is weak and angry.

When you dream, this person comes as a murderer or a stalker and it is really you. This person can be a scary figure or someone that is a friend or a relative. When you see them in your dream you might get scared and you will need to accept the images as who you are so that you can understand them.

  • Anima/Animus

This is the male and female part of who you are. Everyone has both of these qualities and when you dream, it can be a feminized figure while the animus comes as a masculine form. You might dream that you are a man dressed as a woman or that you are a woman that grows a beard.

The dream images can come depending on the qualities that you have in yourself and they help to remind you that you can express your sensitive or masculine side.

  • Divine Child

This is who you are in your purest form and is your innocence. You might feel vulnerable or that you are helpless, and this dream can leave you open to all things in life. This figure is shown as a child.

  • Wise Old Man/Woman

This is a dream helper and can be a teacher, doctor, father or someone that seems to be in authority. They give you wisdom and help you to go the right direction in life.

  • The Great Mother

This is the nurturer in your dream. She will come as your own mother or a grandmother or a lady figure. She will give you reassurance and sometimes will come in the form of a witch. This can mean dominance or death.

This can be rooted in the idea that a real mother gives life and can be jealous when you grow away from her.

  • Trickster

The trickster is the one that plays jokes and tries not to take you too seriously. This can come as a dream when you misjudge a situation, or you take things too seriously.

The tricksters will make you feel embarrassed and sometimes will mock you or make fun of you and show what you are vulnerable in.

These kinds of dreams are called mythical dreams or grand dreams and they come when you are transitioning to something else in your life. These can leave you feeling like you learned something that was important about who you are, and they are dreams that normally stick with you for a long time.

Hall Dream Theory

5
Calvin S. Hall, Jr. was born in 1909

Calvin S. Hall, Jr. was born in 1909 and he believed that dreams were full of content, and he did a study called “Content Analysis.” In his study, he thought that dreams were important in the cognitive process of thoughts. He believed that dreams were a map from the different regions of your brain, and this was called the unconscious mind.

Hall believed that dreams would help you discover what thoughts you had, and they could help to explain why you behave a certain way. He believed that dreams revealed hidden things about people, and he categorized dreams into five areas including concept of self, concepts of other people, concepts of the world, concepts of impulses, prohibitions and penalties, concepts of problems and conflicts.

Concept of Self

This is the type of roles that you play in your dreams.

Concepts of Other People

This is the stage of dreams where you see people in your dreams, and it depends on why they are there on how you interact with them.

Concepts of the World

This represents how you dream about the world around you such as your environment. Your dreams can help to describe how you see the world.

Concepts of Impulses, Prohibitions and Penalties

This can show how you behave to rules and punishment.

Concept of Problems and Conflicts

This shows the struggles that you have and the different situations that you face when you are awake in your life. The dreams that you have will show you how to solve your problems.

By using these different concepts, Hall believed that you could analyze your dreams and find out why they are in your unconscious mind.

Freud Dream Theory

5
Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 and he is considered the father of psychoanalysis. He believed that dreams could be interpreted and wrote a study called “Interpretation of Dreams.” Freud thought that if you could analyze dreams that you could understand the personality of someone. He believed that nothing ever happened by chance, but it happened because of your unconscious mind and how you think.

If you live in a society that is civilized, you can hold back the way that you act and not act on your impulses, but Freud believed that you had to be able to release these impulses in some way and that they sometimes came out as a disguise.

Freud believed that you could release these urges through dreams and then your unconscious mind would be content and would not do the harmful things. He believed that the unconscious mind would express itself with symbols.

He put dreams in three categories including the Id, Ego and Superego.

  • The Id is the impulses and pleasures that you have and urges that you wish to do.
  • The Ego has to do with your conscious mind and helps you to be more aware of your moral and your mind.
  • The Superego is what censors the Id and is responsible for you being moral.

When you are awake, you have impulses and desires and they Id will not act on them because the Superego stops them. When you dream, you can get an idea of what your unconscious mind wants you to do but since your guards are not up when you dream, you have the opportunity to act on your impulses and desires through the Id.

The desires of the Id can be disturbing and since your body is no longer censoring them when you dream, your dreams might be more symbolic and disturbing. When your body takes these disturbing images, it helps you to not be shocked by the images because they come in symbols instead of regular form.

Freud believed that you have a hard time remembering your dreams because of the images being so disturbing that your unconscious mind blocks them.

Tools

Freud believed that dreams comes from different content and that there are ways that you can understand your dreams even when they do not make sense. The believes that the dream is trying to give you a look at your unconscious mind and that if you look at the content of your dream that you can figure out what your dream really means.

Using the tool called Free Association can help you to understand the symbols of your dream and you can try to figure this out and see what happens next.

When you try to interpret your dreams, you can see the interpretation like this:

  • Displacement which means to desire one thing, but it shows up as a different kind of symbol.
  • Projection is when the dreamer will try to get their own desires to someone else.
  • Symbolization happens when the dreamer represses the urge to act out their desires in a metaphoric way.
  • Condensation happens when the dream was hide what they are feeling and will have dream images. The dream images will not be obvious to the dreamer.
  • Rationalization is the last stage of the dream stages and the dreams can help to organize in your mind and be more logical. This is called secondary revision.
  • Freud believes that sexual dreams are the cause of what happens in your dreams. He believes that every elongated or slender object represents a phallus and any receptacle stands for the female genitalia.

Personality Development

Freud believes that there are five stages of a personality including: oral, anal, phallic, latency period and genital.

Oral/Dependency

This stage happens up the age of two and this is where the child will use their mouth to explore things. When they are not satisfied with this stage, it can lead to bad habits such as smoking or drinking because of their oral fixes. Having dreams that happen over and over again can mean that their needs were not met at this time.

Anal/Potty Training

This is the second personality stage, and this is when kids learn to control their body functions. When a child is traumatized about something during this stage it can mean that they will become anal retentive and controlling. Dreaming during this time can cause a child to have obsessive compulsive disorders. People in this situation will often have dreams that their life is out of control.

Phallic Stage

This stage happens between three to five years of age and this is when a child knows about their body and male and females. The personality is already developed, and this is also called the Electra Complexes or the Oedipus stage. The Oedipus stage is when there is a male child’s love for their mother, and they have jealousy of their father. The Electra of this stage is where the female child will love the father and be jealous of her mother. Some call this penis envy.

Latency Period

Nothing much happens during this stage and it is just getting older.

Genital

When kids are around twelve years old, they begin to go through puberty. This is a stage of sexual interest.

Freud believes that this is the stage where dream is a place where there can be fulfillment. If a person has problems with power or being out of control, this can come in their dreams and they can see what they need. This is a time where they will repress their thoughts and they will dream so they can be fulfilled.

Freud believes that each image or symbol that happens in a dream has to do with sex. Anxiety can mean that you are repressed from sex. Many believe that Freud was preoccupated with sexual imagery and he had his own relationship problems and that is why he came up with this theory.

Adler Dream Theory

5
Alfred Adler

Alfred Adler was born in 1870 and he believed that dreams would help people to control their lives, even when they were awake. He felt that dreams helped to solve problems and would come so that people could better understand the problems that they had.

Learning Your Dreams

Adler felt that learning your dreams and learning to work them into your life could help you to make a connection between the problems that you have and how you deal with them. When you dream more, Adler felt that you had more problems in your life and the less dreams that you dreamt meant that you have less problems and are healthier in your mind.

Controlling Dreams and Behavior

Adler thought that you could use dreams to control your behavior and that people that did not control their behaviors were controlled by their unconscious mind. He felt that people that wanted to work towards perfection and needed to be in control of their life did things that they did for a purpose because the unconscious and conscious mind did not work together.

Adler felt that the unconscious and conscious mind fought against each other, and they would work rather you were sleeping or awake.

Dreams and Thoughts

Dreams were the pathway to your thoughts, according to Adler and he believed that dreams brought out your real emotions and how you act. Your dreams can help you meet your desires, but they also cause people to overcompensate for things that they are not good at in life.

Feeling Accepted in Society

If you cannot stand up to your bully while you are awake, you can stand up to them while you are dreaming, and this can make you feel accepted in society and help you to have more happiness.

Final Thoughts

Knowing and understanding your dreams is important. Dreams can tell a lot about a person and about what they are thinking and feeling. When you have vivid dreams and you have strong feelings, these things can mean something important for your life.
