Dreaming of Your Ex

Dreaming of Your Ex

Some people believe the old wives’ tale that if you dream about your ex, they must have been thinking about you. But, of course, this isn’t usually the case, and even if it were, it would be very hard to prove. So, what’s the true symbolism and meaning behind dreaming about your ex?

First, you need to know that this is a fairly common dream subject. It can happen whether you’re in a relationship currently, recently experienced a breakup, or just started a new relationship. So basically, it can happen to anyone, at any time.

Unresolved Feelings

These dreams may indicate unresolved feelings towards this person. It’s not uncommon to dream about your ex if your split from them was particularly bad, or traumatic to you. Sometimes, a relationship ends with things left unsaid, and you may end up harboring a lot of unresolved feelings as a result. Dreaming about your ex, in this instance, may be your mind’s way of gaining some much-needed closure, and it can be a very therapeutic experience.

It’s also not uncommon to dream of your ex after breaking up with someone else, your subconscious mind drawing parallels between the two events. You may even dream of an ex after a fight or rough patch with your current partner, fearing the end of your current relationship.

It’s important that you understand that dreaming of your ex doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re still in love with them, or even that you want to be in a relationship with them. It can be your mind’s way of wandering to good, happy memories of this person. Sometimes your mind takes these thoughts and runs with them, idealizing them or even fantasizing about them.

In a Committed Relationship

There are two different scenarios and meanings if you dream about an ex while you’re in a committed relationship with someone else. If your relationship is happy and healthy, yet you still dream about your ex, it could actually be happening because you’re happy. Feeling happy and secure can make you feel comfortable enough to deal with unresolved negative feelings from your past relationship and move on.

If you are having dreams about your ex while you’re currently in an unsatisfying relationship, this may be your mind’s way of getting you to think about leaving. You could be seeing similarities between the end of your last relationship and this one. Your brain may also be showing you positive actions of your ex that your current partner hasn’t been doing, or you may be thinking “Well, my ex didn’t treat me this way…”

If you’re in a new relationship and you dream about your ex, this is your mind comparing the two. You’re still learning about this new person, and your brain is comparing their positive and negative traits against those of your ex. It’s also not uncommon to dream of your ex for a while after you get in a new relationship. It might just mean that you really cared about them, and that thinking or dreaming about them is still automatic to you. Sometimes it requires time and healing for the thoughts and dreams to dissipate.

Events in Your Current Life

Often, in dreams, dreams about an ex symbolize hope for a type of love that you don’t currently experience while you’re awake. You could be dreaming about their desirable actions and traits. You don’t have to be in love with someone or want to be in a relationship with someone to miss some of the things they said or did. And you may wish that someone in your life had these traits or did things for you the way your ex did.

If you’re going through a particularly stressful period in your life, your dreams could be trying to show you a happier time in your life. This happy time period may be represented by your ex, even if you weren’t happy with them at the time. This is partially because one of the things you remember about the time period is your past relationship with your ex.

Interpreting the symbolism behind dreaming of your first love isn’t hard. You’re probably missing the feeling of being romantic without having adult responsibilities, or simply wishing that your life was more carefree with less responsibilities. This dream may be telling you to try to recapture some of your freedom and your youth.

Dreaming about an ex could symbolize the return of a bad habit or a problem. This could be something you do in relationships that you feel is destructive or unhealthy. It could also be something like being too lax with your health and fitness routine, smoking, drinking, or any number of other bad habits.

Or…

It’s not always the case, but you may actually both love and miss your ex. This can be especially true of dreams where the two of you reconcile. These dreams could be a way for your mind to play out what you truly want. People often dream of marrying an ex or getting engaged to them. This could be because it’s how you felt about the person and what you genuinely wanted while you were with them. But it could also mean that it’s still what you want.

No matter what your current relationship status is, if you’re dreaming about your ex, the best way to interpret the meaning behind these dreams is to analyze them. Other than your ex being there, what happened during the dream? Was anyone else there? How did your ex-act in the dream? How did the dream end? By asking those questions and looking at what’s going on in your own life, you’ll have a greater understanding of the symbolism and meaning behind dreaming about your ex.
